A practical map of English word origins

About LexiOrigin

LexiOrigin is a free client-side tool for exploring the layers inside English vocabulary. It highlights words by likely origin, including Germanic, Romance, Hellenic, Celtic, Arabic, Sanskrit, Hebrew, Japanese, Chinese, and other sources.

The goal is not to replace a historical dictionary. Instead, LexiOrigin gives writers, students, teachers, and editors a fast visual way to notice how word origin affects tone, formality, and style.

How the Analyzer Works

The tool checks normalized words against an embedded vocabulary guide, then applies morphology rules for common prefixes, suffixes, spelling patterns, and borrowed forms. Contractions are expanded before analysis so words such as "don't" are counted as "do not".

Privacy-First Design

Analysis happens in your browser. Text that you type or import is processed locally by the page scripts and is not sent to a LexiOrigin server.

Limitations

English word history can be complicated. Some words have mixed histories, multiple routes into English, or disputed classifications. LexiOrigin is best used as a learning and writing aid, not as a definitive scholarly source.
